ARAW NG MANANAGAT

Fisherfolks’ Day focuses on the fishing communities of Bantayan Island and its surrounding islets, where generations of fisherfolk face displacement as coastal lands are taken over for tourism and private development. Created through long-term collaboration between artist Martha Atienza, GOODLand, and the local fisherfolk, the work documents the Fisherfolks’ Day 2022 parade — over forty decorated fishing boats sailing together in a collective act of pride and resistance. The day became both a celebration and a political gesture, asserting the community’s right to remain and to be heard.

From this movement, AANo. 27 was established, creating a Marine Protected Area in Mambacayao Dako and initiating an ordinance to declare May 31 as Bantayan Fisherfolks’ Day. Accompanied by youth films Sugdan Ko (It Starts With Me) and Way Pag Otro (No Other Way), Adlaw sa mga Mananagat affirms what can be achieved when a community organizes — reclaiming agency, protecting memory, and shaping the future of their islands together.
